The first plastic football helmets, the forerunners of what we’d think of today as a helmet, were created in 1940 by John Riddell and his son. The helmet was single molded so that it was stronger, more durable, and cheaper. As an added bonus, it wouldn’t rot when exposed to consistently damp temperatures either.
That helmet became inspiration for improving safety of the workers. He patented "Hard-Boiled Hat" in 1919, a hard hat made of steamed canvas, glue and black paint. Bullard was commissioned by U.S. Navy that same year to make a hard hat for shipyard workers so he improved a hard hat with inner suspension which provided better efficiency of the hard hat.
In 1911, Charles Owen began manufacturing cork helmets in London for the military. By 1928, the cork helmet was being covered with a hard exterior and became the first motorcycle helmet. Ten years later, Owen developed its first racing helmet, and the equestrian world was changed forever.
