25/6/2006, · What I have done to loosen or stretch a too tight helmet is to take an empty 2-litre soda bottle and wrap a bath towel around it and stuff it in the helmet overnight. It usually will stretch the foam inside just enough that when it recompresses around my head it starts to form-fit. I've had much less discomfort breaking in a helmet this way.

One thing you can do is lengthen the helmet just a touch. Making it longer still increases the total volume inside, so after stretching it out before you wear it, it will hopefully be a bit less painful. And like others have said, using a ball or stacked tuna cans or something else to keep the helmet in widened position while not in use will help too
